What Fluids Do You Need to Change in Electric Vehicles?

You know that electric cars do not use oil, so if you’re searching around Ballwin for an electric car oil change, don’t waste your time. That said, there are a few maintenances you still need to look out for. These fluids still need to be changed from time to time:

  • Transmission fluid: EVs often feature single but infinite gear transmissions. While these transmissions are radically different from traditional transmissions, they still need to be lubricated with transmission fluid.
  • Coolant: Coolant is especially important for an EV, as it’s vital that you regulate the temperature of your battery so that it doesn’t overheat.
  • Brake Fluid: EVs still feature brakes, and you want to make sure that your brakes’ hydraulic system and calipers are still properly lubricated.

In addition to fluid changes, you’ll also want to stay on top of tire rotations, wheel balancing, alignments, and other classic maintenance!

Electric Vehicle Anatomy

Let’s take a look at how EVs differ structurally from gas-powered vehicles. For starters, EVs don’t feature combustion engines. Rather, they’re propelled by a battery-powered motor(s). The battery sends electrical currents to a magnetic motor, which creates a magnetic field, causing the motor to churn and propel your vehicle forward. Here are the unique components of an EV:

  • Traction motors: These motors turn your axles.
  • Charging ports: You’ll use these external charging points to “fill up” when you recharge your battery at a charging station.
  • Onboard charger: This system converts external electrical currents into DC power.
  • DC-DC converter: This system transforms high-voltage DC power from a charging station into compatible low-voltage power that your car can use.
  • Thermal system: These system monitors and regulates the temperatures of your battery, motor, and general electric system.
