How to Jumpstart a Car the Right Way

How do you jumpstart a car that doesn’t have a battery right under the hood like a BMW? To get started, you need to find the starter aid terminals. These are generally located just to the side of the engine. From there, you’ll just need some jumper cables and another driver to help. Whether you need to learn how to jumpstart a BMW 328i or any other model we sell, follow the steps listed below!

How to Jumpstart a Car: Connecting Your Cables

Have the driver of the working vehicle pull up to face the BMW with the dead battery, but don’t allow the vehicles to touch. Turn on the operational vehicle, pop the hood, and attach the cables in the following order:

  1. Attach one of the red clamps to your own BMW vehicle’s positive (red) terminal.
  2. Attach the other red clamp to the positive (red) terminal on the assisting vehicle
  3. Attach the black clamp to the assisting vehicle’s negative (black) terminal.
  4. Attach the other black clip to any unpainted metal surface on your vehicle.

As you complete these steps, be sure that the clamps never touch. If they do, sparks may fly which can be quite dangerous when working under the hood!

How to Jumpstart a Car: Charging the Battery

Once you have everything hooked up, you’ll want to wait a couple of minutes for the battery to charge. Once some time has passed, get into your vehicle and start the engine. If it doesn’t turn on right away, give it a few more minutes. When the vehicle is working again, remove the jumper cables – be sure to show caution that the cables never touch!

After learning how to jumpstart a BMW 328i, drive for about 30 minutes to give the alternator time to work! If you shut off your vehicle too quickly, the battery will likely die again.
