BMW Oil Changes

The Importance Of Regular Oil Changes

Getting your oil changed is a regular part of car ownership and could be the most well-known form of automotive maintenance. Oil breaks down over time due to the intense heat in your engine and without regular oil changes, your BMW’s engine could be damaged by oil that can no longer keep it properly lubricated.

Why Waiting Too Long Is Dangerous

The thing about regular automotive maintenance is it’s easy to ignore you get busy and life gets in the way. But we’ve all seen people on the shoulder of a busy Chesterfield road waiting for either a tow-truck or somebody to pick them up. In some cases this is unavoidable however, in others this was due to not getting regular maintenance. When your oil goes bad your engine can seize up or completely fail and in a worst-case scenario you could end up in an accident. Waiting too long between oil changes puts yourself and other drivers in danger.

Creating Good Oil Change Habits

Some basic good habits can help protect your car from damage due to old oil. Keep the following tips in mind and you greatly reduce the chances you’ll miss an oil change or go too long without one.

  • Always follow the schedule in your owner’s manual concerning oil changes and regular maintenance.
  • Pay attention to any warning lights that come on and don’t ignore them.
  • Check your oil level at least once a month with its dipstick or if your BMW does not have one (some models don’t) it should have an oil level sensor you can check via the interior console.
  • Another good habit is to not try to push your oil change intervals such as changing it every 12,000 miles instead of the recommended 10,000 for synthetic oil or 3,400 instead of the recommended 3,000 for conventional oil.

Local Shops Verses Certified Dealerships

In St. Louis and surrounding communities such as Wildwood you have a ton of independent shops, dealerships, and mechanics advertising their services. When picking a shop always go with one that’s fully certified by BMW. Certification means they have the proper training and use the proper parts when working on your car. Non-OEM parts and fluids are a bad idea and can damage your car due to not meeting the required standards set by BMW.
